Battery Monitoring

Why do I need battery monitoring?

  • To avoid unplanned power interruptions due to Battery failure.
  • Protect your back-up power for “revenue producing assets”.
  • To support and protect your UPS system.
  • Increase your system resilience.

Can you afford not to monitor your battery?

  • Prolong the life of your battery, a critical asset to providing Uninterrupted Power.
  • Reduce replacement costs, by selective cell/ bloc/jar replacement.
  • Avoid business damaging losses due to power outages.
  • The annual cost of power outages goes up every year due to increased reliance on Data Processing, Telecom Infrastructure, Industrial Processes, Web Hosting and Collocation providers etc.

A fully automatic cell monitoring system designed to run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Permanently wired electronic data capture system built around NDSL’s unique instrument technology to provide you with predictive monitoring of your lead-acid storage batteries. The parameters it uses for predictive monitoring are voltage, current, temperature and ohmic value.
The software runs on a 19” rack or wall mounted server running a highly modified version of Windows XP. The 100% dedicated server is modified to auto-start as soon as power is applied and start to monitor your batteries. The system can be accessed across the network, the Internet, via a phone line or using a keyboard and screen.

Monitors cell, string and battery voltage, cell ohmic value, current and temperature

iBMU Data collected from continuous cell monitoring is stored on the system hard drive and can be accessed from remote computers. Additionally, it is viewable in graphical format on the built in computer over a network or the Internet; any time during the day.

At the end of each day, all data is averaged and stored in a file on the hard drive for local or remote viewing as a historical trend so that you can see what has happened and help formulate a future corrective action response.

Tests are performed multiple times per day for accurate and immediate warning.

Cellwatch Software Screenshot Batteries can fail in as little as two days. This state-of-the-art battery monitoring is a 24 x 7 x 365 testing system that allows you to know the status of your critical battery backup instantly.  In today’s competitive data center climate, is knowing the status of your critical battery systems four times a year, good enough?

Automatic, electronic battery monitoring is used to fill the gap between three monthly technician visits or traditional monthly battery monitoring scans. The system scans all of your critical battery parameters ensuring you have the most up-to-date information on your battery systems. If an alarm occurs, (for example a temperature warning or a discharge is taking place), it will automatically turn the battery tab, string tab and the representation of the jar or cell ‘red’ on the computer screen. Only if a discharge is detected will the scan stop, and in all cases alert the user, and will always get back to the scan when the crisis is over.

Tracks discharge events automatically for instant record of cell failure or weakness.

The best way to test a battery is to put it under load.  When there is a  discharge, it takes a snapshot reading of your entire battery – and continues to record data for each channel as fast as 20 millisecond per reading for the duration of the discharge.

This performance data for each jar of the system is stored on the iBMU, and can later be viewed graphically from within the system allowing you to see the best and worst jars or cells at the end of the event. This data is recorded and stored automatically 24 x 7 x 365. Graphs can be zoomed and cut and pasted for easy reporting and battery performance determinations.

Solid state, no moving parts, low voltage. All add up to a high reliability system.

No high DC voltage systems, no long wiring looms, no switching relays (except for four remote alarm switches that we added so you can interface to our electronics easier). Add a fiber optic interface for safety, and Windows XP software – it doesn’t get much easier. Cellwatch is UL approved and CE marked for your safety.

Windows monitoring and reporting software. Easy to learn, easy to use.

We believe in providing straight forward, easy to interpret information about your critical battery systems, 24 x 7 x 365.  The system is designed to be cost effective and easy to install and use, making it an excellent platform for determining, planning, budgeting and most importantly increasing the reliability of your battery data and uptime.

In a power critical environment it is essential to know the state of health of the lead acid batteries supporting the critical load.

Battery monitoring ensures that these critical batteries are in a good state of health and will function when required. Monitoring is also unique in that it can monitor generator start batteries that are often forgotten.

Most UPS power failures are not due to UPS problems but actually are due to battery failure. In many cases valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries can fail within just a few days.

Traditional battery monitoring systems perform the most crucial test – ohmic value— once or twice a month.  Our solution has been specifically designed to monitor the ohmic value of all of the jars every day. It can do this because of the very light test load used.

Improve UPS uptime

The daily information provided allows you to replace suspect cells before they fail, eliminating costly downtime and disruption due to battery failure.

Reduce maintenance costs by 75%

Costly maintenance visits can be reduced when you know in advance which cells are nearing the end of their life. Go from quarterly maintenance visits to one!

Manage battery assets

Knowing the rate your battery is aging and deteriorating allows you to budget for battery replacement while maintaining your continual uptime.
