Datacenter Magazine just published an article about Power and Cooling.

“With the tools available to us today, both IT and Facility managers have a chance to make a big difference. While having an enormous amount of resources around us to help quantify the go-forward strategy, finance will continue to be a hurdle. Power and Cooling do not help the company grow. Yet without it your infrastructure can not provide the things needed to support that growth. I am discussing some changes regarding Power and Cooling in the data center that will help justify your existence and the cost for change.”…

“These are several quotes that I have heard over just a few months.

‘We just experienced a power failure and our facility is just so
out of date.’
‘I’m experiencing a high number of power spikes and my equipment
cannot afford the one time it is not protected.’
‘Our cooling is either working or not working and we cannot afford
to over spend on large CRAC units when we aren’t even sure
what will be in our racks and what we need.’
‘After a study we did to lower our utility costs, we found that 80%
of our cost were coming from our data center and 80% of that was
from our CRAC units.’
‘We make so many changes in our data center that you wouldn’t
believe what we pay in whip changes.’
‘We do our best to charge back for power usage and we have
no idea how close we are.’
‘We cannot grow because we are out of power.’
‘We are doing our best to figure out how to direct cooled air
where we need it.’

The article discusses perhaps some of your very own concerns and potentially other areas of improvements. Some of the areas and products discussed are Electrical BUS Systems, UPS Efficiency products, Rack/Cooling/Containment and power monitoring solutions.

I’ve attached the Full Article here from Datacenter Magazine

Has monitoring become more of a “need” than a “want” in your datacenter?

Whether at a specific outlet or BUS, the desire to know what power draw in a given day or project has become a necessity, in my opinion. End Users, Co-Lo’s and Managed Service Models all have requirements to charge appropriately for used power. Power bills in the south aren’t getting cheaper.

Hmm, how creative can you get for govt credits? Or prove what you’ve saved over time?

Power Monitoring has become the next “must have” in the datacenter.

I heard a crazy story and since it was from the south, you might be the end user that experienced this. After monitoring the power usage over a few weeks, there was a spike every night at a certain time. Where am I going with this? You can fill in the blanks.

You can also think of ways to save your company a lot of money buy turning some things off during certain times. How do you do all of this? It has become extremely cost effective and easy to monitor.

Electrical BUS systems do more than give me ease of power where I need it and when I need it. They offer Power Monitoring at the BUS or even BUS Outlet level. Beyond this, you’ve got control all the way down to the power strip or even individual outlet.

Monitored Globally from a single pane of glass. You now have control of who uses what and how much power is consumed. You also have the ability to remotely manage and shut off devices if need be.

Here are a few necessities for some clients:

Alerts and Alarms
Device Level Measurement
Power Management
Data Center Power
Solutions for Telecommunications
Solutions for Government
Green Iniatives
Data Collection Management
415V Solutions
Cisco Nexus 7000 Series
Wire-Free Power Monitoring

If this has been an afterthought or you are designing the next remodel or datacenter, send us an email to info@criticalpowersys.com

When looking at installing a new UPS for your Datacenter, there are alot of options to consider. CIO’s like to drive out cost while optimizing efficiencies and support cost. GE is taking a significant approach to driving out cost and improve your overall efficiencies and lower cost.

What is eBoost?
> e = high efficiency (up to 99%) guaranteed
> Boost = fast transfer to inverter < 2ms eBoost operation provides considerable energy life cycle cost savings ranging from $0.5MMto $7MM.

** Savings are dependent upon load, power costs and life cycle duration (years).
** Assumptions:
• Power Cost = $0.10/kw-hr ( GA costs are increasing )
• Operating Hrs/Year = 8,760
• Configuration = S+S operating
• at 50% of capacity

Technology Breakthroughs

> Up to 99% UPS efficiency
> Compliant to ITI (CBEMA) curve during transient events
> Up to 4.5 MVA UPS capacity using Redundant Parallel Architecture (RPA)
> Magnetizing the output transformer ensures < 2ms transfer time to inverter > Static bypass inductor and output capacitor for filtering utility power
> Battery trickle charge in eBoost operating mode

Customer Benefits
> 80% reduction in UPS losses
> System energy cost savings
> Reduced heat (BTU) generation
> Energy savings from reduced cooling
> Extended UPS component life
> User-programmable scheduling
> Reduced acoustical noise

Computer Environmental Systems Inc., dba Critical Power Systems turned 27 yesterday. We were so busy that I didn’t get a chance to share with everyone else. My apologies.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

We have enjoyed getting more mature with age and experiencing things over the last 27 years that have brought great insight to our abilities.

We want to thank all of our Partners, Electrical Contractor, General Contractors, End Users, IT VARs and the like for helping us provide the things that you need for us all to enjoy life to it’s fullest.

We are in the middle of big change once again. Environmentals are what seem to be on a lot of peoples minds. Efficiencies are driving these needs.

Data Center Flooring – Let’s get better Airflow and extend the life of our CRAC.
Rack Design – Let’s get Efficient Rack solutions that allow us to get proper airflow to our Mission Critical Systems. Let be able to log in over the wire and turn ports off for maintenance. Let’s monitor Temperature and Humidity of the Racked Systems and Servers.
UPS Efficiencies with eBoost.
Network Cabling and Electrical experience

Project Management: We need someone who truly understands how a datacenter is run when fully operational and we want someone to PM the Electrical, Network Cabling and Rack Deployment as it is tightly integrated into the IT VAR of choice.

We now have 27 years of working with General Contractors, Electrical Contractors…..IT Integration Partners and we can provide expertise and partnerships together as we Optimize the Next Generation DataCenter with Efficiencies.

We have enjoyed working in the area of Healthcare and MRI needs to Data Center Mission Critical Facilities to Closet POD solutions. We look forward to growing into the next generation of needs.

Thanks again for a great 27 years and we look forward to working with you into the future.
